It depends on which project you have chosen. Some projects require formal dressing. Therefore, packing a few formal clothes won’t harm

(Volunteer Program) Do I need to be fit/in shape for my project?

We should always be healthy and maintain our fitness. However, it depends on the project you choose and you should always be ready to work.

(Volunteer Program) How old do I have to be?

We accept participants aged from 16 and above. Participants under the age of 18 must travel with a parent or legal guardian. There is no upper age limit however, we recommend participants to check with the program options that are available.

(Volunteer Program) How can I prepare mentally?

Our Culture week program covers most of the topics including culture shock and how to adapt to Culture and Traditions. One should come with an open mind. We suggest you to go through the program guide.

What is the electric current in Madagascar? Can I use my normal electrical plugs?

The power plugs and sockets suitable for Madagascar are of type C, D, E, J and K. The standard voltage is 127 / 220 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz.

What should I wear? Is there a dress code?

Although your dress code depends on which part of the exchange you are on and what time of year it is, you should bear in mind some basic points.

It is best to observe how local people dress and copy them, they will take this as a great compliment and a sign of respect for their culture. The safest choice of clothes to bring is "smart casual.” Remember that while working on whichever program, the priority is to feel comfortable and dedicate your time to help out. Make sure to pack according to your needs and preferences.

Are there any health concerns I need to be aware of? Do I need special shots, medications?

It is recommended that you visit your personal physician or a travel health clinic 4 to 8 weeks before your departure to Madagascar. Recommended vaccinations before arriving here include Yellow Fever, hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus diphtheria. Furthermore, if you plan to stay for a longer period, you will need to get shots of other diseases such as Rabies and
Hepatitis B.

You might want to bring some type of oral antibiotic that can help with stomach ailments. Even though the places you eat will be clean and hygienic, there is always a chance of upset stomach often depending upon how delicate your constitution, but the problem
normally passes quickly with suitable medication.

Is Madagascar safe?

Nosy Be is far safer than other parts of Madagascar, but you should be cautious all the time. Make sure you have an insurance in case of any incident. Take responsibility of your actions. Threats can come in the form of health or theft, such as pickpocketing, robbery, assault.

Therefore, it is always best to be extra careful in the crowded places such as markets, beaches, and public transportation. Do not carry valuable items with you and in case of theft or loss of your valuables please file a complaint at the police. The police report will
help you to claim the loss from your insurance.

What is the climate like?

The island of Nosy Be is located off the northwest coast of Madagascar. In Nosy Be, the climate is tropical and hot all year round. There is a rainy and hot season from November to April, and a dry season from May to October.

The rainiest months here are December, January and February. During this period, the rains are frequent with only a few days of sunshine.

What language is spoken?

Malagasy, French, and English are the languages spoken in Madagascar.

What is the local currency? What currency and how much money should I bring?

The local currency of Madagascar is Malagasy Ariary (AR). You can easily exchange money at the airport or at money exchangers. Visa and MasterCard too are accepted in Madagascar. You can also use Euros for transaction but we would suggest you to exchange the money at the airport.
